Holiday Traditions of England

Christmas is Britain's most popular holiday and is characterized by traditions which date back hundreds of years. Many Christmas customs which originated in Britain have been adopted in the United States.

The first ever Christmas card was posted in England in the 1840s, and the practice soon became an established part of the build-up to Christmas. Over a billion Christmas cards are now sent every year in the United Kingdom, many of them sold in aid of charities.Christmas Day sees the opening of presents and many families attend Christmas services at church. Christmas dinner consists traditionally of a roast turkey, goose or chicken with stuffing and roast potatoes. This is followed by mince pies and Christmas pudding flaming with brandy, which might contain coins or lucky charms for children. (The pudding is usually prepared weeks beforehand and is customarily stirred by each member of the family as a wish is made.) Later in the day, a Christmas cake may be served - a rich baked fruit cake with marzipan, icing and sugar frosting.

Flag of England

The Flag of England is the St George's Cross (heraldic blazon: Argent, a cross gules). The red cross appeared as an emblem of England during the Middle Ages and the Crusades (although originally a white cross on red background) and is one of the earliest known emblems representing England. It also represents the official arms of the Most Noble Order of the Garter, and it achieved status as the national flag of England during the sixteenth century

The capital of England is London, greatest city in Great Britain and European union. England is a place of origin of English and Anglican church, and the English legislation forms basis of the legal systems of many countries; in addition, London was the center of the Britannic empire . England was the first industrially developed country in the world, and also by a country with parliamentary democracy the constitutional, governmental and legal innovations of which were adopted other nations and countries.

Our  names are Lena and Sveta’s. We live in Ukraine, Rivne. We are 15 years old. We study at school №15,at 10-th form. Many children have their own hobby.

Sveta’s hobby is music. In 12 years she had finished a school of music. She take part in many concerts and competition, many of them  she won and she had a lot of award.

Lena hobby is photography. She like to take a photo everywhere. A month ago she finished Art school in which she had been study  eight years. At the Art school she drew a lot of different pictures. Later she took part in many auctions.
